Sir Richard Steele (16721729) was an English statesman and a
publisher of periodicals, the most renowned being The Spectator
(1711). He also contributed heavily to his journals and was a
playwright. His writing made him well-known in both literary and
political circles. In fact, his pamphlet The Crisis got him temporarily
expelled from Parliament. His other journals included The Tatler,
TheGuardian and The Englishman.
